Duiker – Blue

Philantomba monticola

The Enigmatic Forest Dweller

The Blue Duiker, a miniature antelope, inhabits the dense forests and woodlands of Central and Southern Africa.

These diminutive creatures are known for their secretive nature and striking blue-gray fur, which sets them apart from other duiker species.

Standing at just 30-40 cm tall at the shoulder and weighing approximately 3-5 kg, Blue Duikers are one of the smallest antelope species.

Their small size, elusive behavior, and habitat preference make them challenging to spot in the wild.

Blue Duikers are browsers, feeding on leaves, fruits, and other vegetation found in the forest understory.

The blue duiker is one of the smallest antelope species in Africa — often reaching only about 30–41 cm at the shoulder. Its name “duiker” comes from the Dutch/Afrikaans for “diver”, because it tends to dive into dense undergrowth when startled. Blue duikers typically form monogamous pairs that share and defend a small territory together.
