Fun fact

The bontebok has a very distinctive chocolate‑brown coat with prominent white markings — including a wide white blaze on the face and a pure white rump and belly. This striking pattern is where it gets its name, “bonte” referring to its colourful markings. They were once nearly hunted to extinction, with only a few dozen wild individuals left before major conservation efforts saved the species.
